Tenga en cuenta que el verbo had, en este caso el pasado to have, se puede escribir con contracción: had not = hadn't (se utiliza de forma general en la lengua hablada, pero también en los escritos informales).
El past perfect se utiliza en algunos de los siguientes supuestos:
✦ Utilizamos el pasado para hablar de cosas hipotéticas, condiciones y deseos:
- We wouldn't (would not) have divorced If you hadn't (had not) been so indecisive.
- If people had not been careless, the number of road accidents would be lower.
- How would be our attitude if we had been rich and famous?
✦ Para algo que sucedió en el pasado y es importante en el momento que se relata:
- My wife was not at home, she had left me. (Mi esposa no estaba en casa, me había dejado hace dos meses).
- At that time she could not come, her son had been ill. (Ella no pudo venir, su hijo había estado enfermo).
- He did not find the car because it had been stolen. (No encontró el automóvil porque lo habían robado).
✦ Cuando se relata una experiencia que es importante hasta el presente:
- My silver wedding was the nicest memory I had ever had (que nunca había tenido).
- They had experienced a new life, since they saved their lives miraculously in Iraq.
- I had never forgotten my old days as footballer, it comes to mind very often.
✦ Con la palabra since cuando algo comenzó en el pasado:
- I had been to that restaurant many times, it is closed since last month.
- She had been my best since we were kids, she emigrated to the USA last year.
- He had been in the club since 1975, he past away last year.
