Tal como sucede en castellano, un adjetivo modifica
un sustantivo o un pronombre al proporcionar detalles descriptivos o
específicos. A diferencia de los adverbios, los adjetivos no modifican verbos,
adjetivos, otros o adverbios. En la lengua inglesa, los adjetivos suelen
preceder al sustantivo o pronombre que modifican. Los adjetivos no tienen que
estar de acuerdo en el número o género con los sustantivos que describen. Los
adjetivos pueden responder a las siguientes preguntas: “what kind?”, “how many?”
o “which ones?”
- Peter bought a unique picture at Selfridges. (unique describes “what kind of picture Peter bought”/unique/único describe “qué clase de cuadro compró Pedro”).
- Andrea designed twenty toys for poor children. (twenty tells how many toys Andrea designed /veinte nos dice cuántos juguetes diseñó Andrea.)
- Robert climbed that blue building in Madrid (that specifies which building Robert climbed? /that/ese (especifica qué edificio escaló Roberto)
Descriptive /calificativo
Como se ha mencionado al comienzo, los adjetivos calificativos expresan y describen una cualidad de una persona, animal o cosa.
- He combed his long auburn hair.
